Mechanical Designer Engineer

Role Summary:The Mechanical Designer is responsible for the detailed design and 3D modeling of switchgear and power distribution products. Working under the technical guidance of the Mechanical Engineering Lead, this role transforms high-level concepts into manufacturing-ready drawing packages. The Designer ensures all outputs are accurate, feasible, and strictly adhere to RIC Power’s design standards and Quality Management System (QMS).
Key Responsibilities:Generate detailed 3D models and manufacturing drawings for switchgear projects using SolidWorks, ensuring all parts and assemblies are modeled to department standards.Prepare and release complete drawing packages for fabrication (steel, busbar, assembly) and create accurate Bills of Materials (BOMs) for the Purchasing Department.Implement mechanical design parameters (bracing, clearances, steel gauge) as defined by the Mechanical Engineering Lead’s calculations and anchor reports.Participate in project kickoffs to confirm scope, present work during design reviews led by the Mechanical Lead, and attend post-mortems to integrate lessons learned into future designs.Perform rigorous self-checks on all drawings and models prior to submitting them to the Mechanical Engineering Lead for formal Design Review.Address immediate production questions and assist in resolving Non-Conformance Reports (NCRs) under the supervision of the Lead.Properly manage all design files within the PDM system, ensuring revision control and file integrity.Prepare laser-cut steel orders and powder coating specifications for external vendors.
Supervisory Requirements:N/A
Key Interactions:Mechanical Engineering Lead: Receive project tasks, design parameters, and technical mentorship; submit work for final approval.Electrical Engineers: Coordinate busbar routing and component layout to ensure electrical and mechanical integration.Production Team: Collaborate on Design for Manufacturability (DFM) to reduce shop floor complexity.Purchasing Department: Ensure accurate BOMs for material availability and cost control.
Required Education and Training:Mechanical Engineering Diploma or Design Certification.Proficiency in SolidWorks and Microsoft Office.Relevant design experience (co-op or industry) is considered an asset.
Required Competencies:Technical Proficiency: Strong command of SolidWorks, PDM, and DraftSight.Attention to Detail: Ability to spot interference issues and tolerance stack-ups before drawings are released.Communication: Clearly articulates design intent to the Lead and Shop Floor.Task Management: Ability to self-manage assigned components of a project to meet deadlines set by the Lead.Teamwork: Works collaboratively within a multi-disciplinary team environment.Adherence to QMS: Actively follows all Quality Management System (QMS) policies and drafting standards.
Measurable Performance:Individual Project Execution:Drawing Accuracy: Measured by the individual contribution to design-related Non-Conformance Reports (NCRs) and shop re-work.Schedule Adherence: Assessed by the ability to complete assigned drawing packages and BOMs on or before the dates scheduled by the Lead.Design Quality: Evaluated by the reduction of clarification requests (RFIs) from Production regarding the designer’s specific outputs.Professional Growth & Collaboration:Technical Development: Assessed by the increasing complexity of tasks handled independently and proficiency in DFM principles.Process Adherence: Measured by the consistency of file management and adherence to QMS drafting standards.
